Just outside Lilla Lökholmen, northeast of Ornö, lies a wreck with an unusual history. Hulda, as the ship was called when she sailed as a freighter, participated in two Swedish film shoots.

Facts

Deep: 9 meters

Build: 1895

Length: 21 meters

Width: 6 meters

Shipwreck: Cirka 1958

Ship type: Galeas

Hulda was built as a schooner in 1895 in Pukavik in Blekinge. She was 21 metres long and carvel-built, in oak and pine. After having several owners, in 1945 she came to be owned by the Nilsson brothers on Ven where she transported cement and sugar beet.

In 1956, Hulda was bought by the Swedish film and cinema company Europafilm to take part in a film shoot. Some scenes from “When the Mills are Running”, with Edvard Person in the leading role, took place during a boat trip to Holland. Hulda sailed back and forth on the Kiel Canal, where both the ship's interior and exterior were shot.

When the film was released, the critics were not gracious in their reviews. One critic wrote that is was “plodding and heavy like Christmas porridge at night-time”.

After the filming, Hulda sailed up to the Stockholm archipelago where she was laid up across from the shipyard in Dalarö. Soon after, the ship was rammed. The damage wasn’t too bad, so she was repaired and sailed out to Lilla Lökholmen.

Hulda was laid up there until the autumn of 1957, when a severe storm tore her away from her mooring line, causing her to capsize. She remained in a semi-sunken state until 1958, when she appeared in another film, “Enslingen i blås väder”, with Stig Järrel in the leading role as the loner Johannes. In the film, two of the actors “find” a ship that is about to sink.

This film didn’t get any rave reviews either, even if the critics treated it more kindly than the first film.

When the film shoot was over, Hulda sank in an autumn storm down to a depth of nine metres.
