To mark the museum’s first birthday, the museum offered free admission, guided tours and other fun activities for all ages during the weekend of 23–25 September. Vrak’s archaeologist divers were on hand to talk about underwater archaeology and the projects they are currently involved in. There was plenty of popcorn and soap bubbles – and the queue for a hot sandwich at Mackverket was long.
Since Vrak – Museum of Wrecks was inaugurated last year, its divers have made several discoveries and gathered knowledge about the Baltic Sea’s cultural heritage, such as defence facilities from the early Middle Ages; the Osmund wreck, with its unique cargo of osmund iron from the 1500s; huge warships from the 1600s; and the cargo steamship Annie from the late 1800s that sank off Umeå.
